“Libraries are a cornerstone of democracy where information is free and equally available to everyone.” Carla Hayden

The Mission of The Sonoma County Public Library Foundation is to provide funding to ensure equitable access to Sonoma County Library services

Vocal advocate. Dedicated funder. Staunch champion.

Since its initial formation in 1986, the Foundation of the Sonoma County Public Library Foundation has been equal parts vocal advocate, dedicated funder and staunch champion for the Sonoma County Library. The Foundation received its IRS designation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in 1991, and since then has made its priority to support SCL services and programming where needed with inspiring examples throughout its history including bolstering various collections, enhancing the capacity of programs, and strengthening services through its strategic donations.

Some recent highlights include:

  • 2015: Joined with other community groups to advocate for a library branch in Southwest Santa Rosa.

In 2015, the Foundation donated $65,000 towards opening a temporary Roseland branch, which established a library presence with resources including children and adult books, computers, community gathering space, and programming.

  • 2018: Donated $70,000 towards programming, prizes, and materials for Summer Reading.

From 2017 to 2018, the Summer Reading program saw double digit participation increases for every age group, and an overall 17% increase in participation in the program.

  • 2019: Donated $50,000 for the Library to purchase an initial 100 Chromebooks.

These Chromebooks can be checked out and taken home where patrons can use them to do homework, apply for jobs, access the numerous digital resources offered by the Library, and plug into the power of the Internet.

  • 2020: Donated to expand WiFi beyond the Sonoma County Library branches.

People can access WiFi from around Sonoma County libraries 24/7, an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • 2022: Launched $3.6 million Roseland Regional Library campaign

We’re raising funds for the furniture, fixtures, and equipment for this state-of-the-art facility, part of the City of Santa Rosa’s Hearn Community Hub project.
